The main plot revolves around a conflict generated by a love triangle in which Julia, who is deeply in love with Astolfo, is also pursued by ardent suitor Federico Duke of Saxony. The Duke kills Astolfo in Julia’s own garden, and from that moment on, the figure of a ghost in Julia’s garden causes tongues to wag, increases the Duke’s jealousy, and ultimately provokes multiple mix-ups and confusion as characters attempt to discover who the mysterious ghost really is.
