‘Voces para Sor Juana’

The ‘Instituto de la Mujer y para la Igualdad de Oportunidades’, attached to the Secretary of State for Equality, was present at the 42nd edition of the Almagro Festival with this project: ‘Voces para Sor Juana’. With this initiative, the Festival had, for the first time, a section dedicated to women. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a distinguished Novohispana writer from the Golden Age, was the protagonist. In this activity, women from diverse backgrounds and variations of culture, politics, art, etc. participated, giving voice to the verses of Sor Juana´s poem ‘Hombres necios’, a work published in 1689. Nowadays this poem continues to expose actual issues, such as inequality and injustice, in which women continue being the main victims.

The San Blas Church welcomed this initiative of the ‘Instituto de la Mujer’. ‘Voces de Sor Juana’ emerged to honor the presence of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, in a global way, beyond the purely artistic area. It was intended that her message, so militant and positively feminist, reach other parameters and the spectators could see the modernity of her thinking. It was created too an audiovisual installation, where women worldwide joined and give a voice to Sor Juana Inés´s message and, in this case, claim the validity of the speech of her poem ‘Hombres necios’. European, American, Asian, African, ethnic, Arab, pre-Hispanic women in politics, the academy, science or arts, coming from different cultures and in different languages all over the world, are united to transmit the greatness of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz´s character and feminist thinking.
